Between Art and Nature: the Chianti Sculpture Park

There is wood of oaks in Pievasciata, a tiny village in the midst of the most beautiful hills in the Chianti area, where trees, meadows, glimpses of the sky above, and little creeks meet statues, bridges, the keel of a ship and a labyrinth where to search for yourself, all in a perfect dialogue between art and nature: this special place is the Chianti Sculpture Park.

On the slopes overlooking Siena, a couple of passionate about art coming from Northern Italy since 2004 has been transforming a portion of wood used in the past for breeding wild pigs, in an encounter of spontaneous landscape and contemporary art, between nature and works of art that artists from all over the world, after visiting the wood,  have placed in a specific point of the park chosen by them,  in a perfect integration with the colours, sounds, lights and the other features of the surrounding environment.

The works realized by the sculptors from all the five continents can be admired through an evocative walk: from an energetic glass column, to statues made with different kinds of stones, especially marble, all statues are perfectly amalgamated with the wood, its little creeks, ups and downs, and meadows that in Spring are dotted with flowers, and in Autumn are inhabited by several kinds of mushrooms.

We visited the Park in April and it was a fantastic surprise: a relaxing walk in the nature and art, accompanied by a complete audio guide that can be downloaded in the official website of the Park either from Google Play or Apple Store, or rented at the ticket office. We warmly suggest to use the audioguide, since having the precise and detailed information about the works of art right in the moment you are admiring them, permits a perfect immersion in the dialogue between the art and nature.

Last but not least, an amphitheatre realized in a natural small valley, that in the Summertime after sunset is the scenario of music concerts.  Here   the complete programme for Summer 2014.

The Park is open daily from 10 a.m. to sunset  (from November to March it is advisable to phone before the visit), tickets 10,00€ for adults,  5,00 € for children under 16 years,  the rental of the audio guide at the ticket office costs 3,00€, while from Google Play and Apple Store is 1,79€ . To reach the Park, only by car since it is not served by public transportation, from Siena either follow the signs for Pianella/Vagliagli or use in your navigator the following GPS coordinates: Long.E. 11° 22′ 53″ – Lat.N. 43° 23′ 36″.
