Christmas in Tuscany: markets and nativity scenes

December is definitely one of my favourite months of the year: even though the days are short and cold is intense,  the upcoming holidays with their lights and ornaments, the delicious Christmas sweets and the several events such as markets and nativity scenes make Christmastime always very special! I love visiting Christmas markets and nativity scenes (the so called “presepi“) and even though many times I just buy a cup of vin brulé or some sweets, the atmosphere is joyful and a visit is worth. Here are some suggestions and ideas to live a happy Christmastime in Tuscany:

Christmas Market in  Palazzuolo sul Senio (FI), Sunday, December 22nd

In the Province of Firenze, near the border with the Region Emilia Romagna, there is an enchanting zone called Alto Mugello, and the evocative village of Palazzuolo sul Senio, where every December the market “The Magic of Christmastime” is organized. In a fascinating atmosphere, the streets of the centre fill with many stalls where you can buy gifts and all sort of decorations, the wooden mountain hut of Santa Claus (Babbo Natale in Italian) and the stands with typical winter products such as  polentahot chocolate, pasta tortellini filled with chestnuts, and  many other delicious dishes! When the night comes, the hamlet’s streets are illuminated by evocative white lanterns. This is one of the most fascinating Christmas market in Tuscany, inspired to the Nordic traditions and atmosphere.
In the same period, the initiative “1,000 nativity scenes for Palazzuolo” will set up in the most characteristic corners of the hamlet nativity scenes in all shapes, sizes and forms.
